Trane Ductwork Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your Trane system has damaged, leaking, or collapsed ductwork, you’re likely losing 20-30% of the air you pay to heat or cool before it ever reaches a room. Ductwork repair in Los Angeles typically runs $285-$1,100 depending on how much of the run is compromised, whether we’re sealing, patching, or replacing sections, and how accessible the ducts are. We stock the sealants, mastic, tapes, collars, and flex duct needed for most Trane-compatible repairs on our trucks, and here’s the thing most owners don’t realize: the Trane unit itself can be running perfectly while bad ductwork makes it look like the system is failing.

Most homeowners call us because one room stays hot while the rest of the house cools fine, or because the system runs constantly and the bill keeps climbing. Sometimes they’ve already had a tech out who said the Trane unit is fine. The problem is almost always the path the air takes, not the machine making it. Let’s walk through what that means for your system, what it costs to fix here, and how we actually go about the work.

Which Trane Models This Applies To

Ductwork is the delivery system that connects your Trane air handler or furnace to every room in the house. The ducts themselves aren’t made by Trane, and they aren’t model-specific the way a control board or blower motor is. What matters is that whoever works on them understands how Trane systems push air, because a Trane variable-speed air handler behaves differently than a single-stage unit from another brand. The static pressure, airflow volume, and velocity all need to work with the duct design, or you’ll be back in the same spot in a year. Victor Mancini and our techs have worked on Trane systems across Los Angeles for years, and we know the difference between ductwork that’s genuinely failing and ductwork that was sized wrong from the start.

That said, there are some Trane-specific compatibility notes worth knowing. If you have a Trane XV or XL series system with a variable-speed blower, undersized or kinked ductwork causes the motor to work harder and fail earlier. Trane communicating systems (the ones with ComfortLink II thermostats) don’t play well with ductwork that has major leaks, because the system reads system static pressure and will throw error codes. And if your home has the older Trane metal ductwork from the 1980s or earlier, as we see in parts of the San Fernando Valley and Pasadena, the duct tape at the joints is probably brittle and falling off by now. We also work on duct systems connected to Carrier and Lennox units, so whatever’s in the closet, we can sort it out. Coldharbour Heating & Air is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Trane, which means we’re honest about whether a part needs to be Trane-branded. For ductwork, it almost never does. What matters is the right gauge, the right sealant, and the right install.

Signs Your Trane Ductwork Is Failing

  • One room won’t heat or cool to the same temperature as the rest of the house. This usually means a supply duct has come apart, kinked, or collapsed somewhere in the run. The air is leaving the system but dumping into an attic or crawlspace instead of the bedroom.
  • Dust appears on furniture within days of cleaning. Return-side leaks pull in unfiltered attic or crawlspace air and distribute it through your house. You’re literally breathing whatever is in the space between your ceiling and roof. In Los Angeles, that’s often a layer of fine dust and, depending on the neighborhood, soot.
  • You can hear air hissing or whistling near registers or where ducts run through walls. That’s air escaping under pressure. It means the system is working harder than it should, and whatever room that duct serves is getting shorted.
  • Your energy bill went up without a matching change in weather or usage. Leaky ducts in a Los Angeles attic can lose 20-30% of the air you’re paying to condition. The Trane unit runs longer to hit the same thermostat temperature, and your bill reflects it.
  • Rooms on one floor are comfortable while the other floor is not. In two-story Los Angeles homes, this often traces back to duct dampers and collapsed flex in between floors. It’s fixable, but only if the tech actually traces the run instead of guessing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Ductwork repair in Los Angeles generally falls into three price bands, all parts and labor included:

  • Sealing and minor patch work: $285-$525. This covers sealing leaking joints with mastic, repairing small tears in flex duct, and reattaching ducts that have slipped off their collars. It’s the most common job we do.
  • Section replacement of flex duct: $450-$875. When the flex itself is torn, crushed, or filled with old insulation that’s breaking down, we cut out the bad section and run new duct. The price depends on run length, diameter, and attic access.
  • Full duct section rebuild or transition replacement: $775-$1,100. When the main trunk or plenum connection is compromised, or multiple supply runs need replacing at once, this is the range you’re looking at.

Every job starts with a written price before any work begins, as is the Coldharbour way. You’ll see exactly what we’re replacing, what it costs, and what the labor is. No price change at the door. And every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the repair fails within a full year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s not a verbal handshake; it’s on paper before we leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check yourself. Look at the registers in the problem rooms. Are they open? Is the damper on the register set to allow airflow? Check for obvious issues like a vent buried under furniture or a closed door that’s creating a pressure imbalance. In the attic, you can visually inspect flex duct for visible kinks, tears, or sections that have fallen off their connections. Crawling through an attic in July in Los Angeles is not for everyone, but if you can see the problem, it’s worth knowing before you call.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong: sealing ducts properly requires mastic, not duct tape. Duct tape dries out and fails, especially in Los Angeles attics where summer temperatures regularly exceed 120°F. Fixing a collapsed duct section properly requires cutting out the bad section, sizing the replacement correctly, and sealing both ends with the right materials. If you get the airflow wrong, you can strain your Trane blower motor, and that’s a much more expensive repair in the $175-$765 range. The honest answer: if the issue is a disconnected duct you can reach easily, you can probably reattach it and seal it with mastic. If it’s torn, crushed, or the problem is in a hard-to-reach area, call us at (817) 402-2972. Victor will tell you what it’s doing and what it needs, with no guessing and no padding the ticket.
