A/C Running Constantly and Never Shutting Off

What’s Happening

An air conditioner that runs without stopping almost always means the system is working harder than it should to reach a temperature it can’t quite hit. The three most common causes are a dirty air filter choking the airflow, a refrigerant leak reducing cooling capacity, or a frozen evaporator coil blocking heat transfer entirely. In most cases, one of these is the problem, and a trained technician can confirm which one within the first hour of the visit.

Call (817) 402-2972

A healthy central air conditioner runs a cycle, cools the space to the set temperature, and then shuts off. When that cycle never ends, the equipment is telling you something is wrong. Left alone, a system running continuously draws more electricity, puts extra wear on the compressor, and raises the chance of a full breakdown at the worst possible moment. The compressor is the most expensive component in the system, and protecting it means not ignoring a symptom like this one.

Why It Happens

Dirty or Blocked Air Filter

A clogged filter restricts the volume of air moving across the evaporator coil. When the coil can’t pull enough warm air through, it can’t transfer heat efficiently, and the system runs longer trying to compensate. Pull the filter out and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see through it at all, that’s almost certainly part of the problem.

Low Refrigerant (Often from a Slow Leak)

Refrigerant is the substance that actually absorbs heat from inside your home. When the charge is low, usually because of a leak somewhere in the refrigerant circuit, the system loses its ability to cool at full capacity. You might also notice the air coming from the vents feels less cold than usual, or that ice has formed on the copper line running from the air handler. Refrigerant handling requires proper certification, so this is not a repair for a homeowner to attempt.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

A frozen coil is often the result of restricted airflow or low refrigerant, but it becomes its own problem once the ice builds up. Ice acts as insulation on a coil that’s supposed to absorb heat, which means the system keeps running without doing much cooling. Look at the indoor air handler: if you see frost or ice on the coil or on the refrigerant lines, shut the system to fan-only mode and call before running it again. Running a frozen coil in cooling mode stresses the compressor and can turn a repair into a replacement.

Oversized or Undersized System, or a Faulty Thermostat

A system that was never correctly sized for the home can run continuously because it’s either too small to meet demand or, counterintuitively, too large and short-cycling in a way that never fully conditions the space. A miscalibrated or failing thermostat can also keep sending a “keep cooling” signal even after the target temperature has been reached. If your thermostat display looks normal but the system behaves oddly, try setting the temperature five degrees above the current room reading and watching whether the system shuts off within a few minutes.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check and replace the air filter. Find the filter slot, usually at the air handler or a return-air grille, slide the filter out, and check whether it’s visibly blocked. A clogged filter is the single easiest fix on this list, and swapping it takes two minutes.
  • Look for ice on the unit. Check the indoor air handler and the refrigerant lines. If you see frost or ice, switch the thermostat to fan-only and stop running cooling mode. Let the coil thaw before the technician arrives. Running a frozen coil harder makes the situation worse.
  • Do not touch the refrigerant lines or the electrical panel connections. The refrigerant circuit is pressurized and the electrical components inside the air handler and outdoor condenser carry enough current to cause serious injury. Observe from the outside, take a photo if you see anything unusual, and leave those components alone.
  • Set the thermostat a few degrees higher and watch what happens. If the system shuts off within a normal cycle, the thermostat may be misreading the room temperature. If it still runs without stopping, note that and tell the technician.
  • Photograph anything visible and unusual. Ice, water pooling around the air handler, a refrigerant line that looks different from the other, a thermostat reading that doesn’t match the room. Photos give the technician useful information before they open a single panel.

How We Fix It

When your local Coldharbour Heating & Air technician arrives, the first step is a full system assessment: airflow, refrigerant pressure, coil condition, thermostat calibration, and electrical components. Before any work starts, you’ll receive a written price for the specific repair. That’s how The Kingswell Way works – the price is on paper and handed to you before a single tool comes out of the bag.

Most of the causes listed above are handled under our AC repair service. A refrigerant leak repair involves locating the breach, sealing it, and recharging the system to the manufacturer’s specification. A frozen coil requires the root cause to be addressed, not just thawing the ice. A thermostat swap is typically completed in the same visit. Most repairs take between one and three hours depending on what’s found.

Every repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair doesn’t hold within that full year, we come back and make it right, no charge and no argument. That promise goes on paper before the technician leaves your home.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 4.8 from 6+ reviews

"The repair was done well and quickly. Scheduling over the phone was a little clunky and I got transferred twice, but the tech himself was great and on time."

- Brett Haygood

"Furnace was short cycling all winter. They diagnosed a bad sensor instead of condemning the whole unit like I feared. Cheap fix, honest call."

- Russ Tiedemann

"Thermostat and a weak blower. Fixed both in one visit, explained the guarantee, and didn't leave a mess. I've already recommended them to my neighbor."
