Trane Heat Pump Service: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
A Trane heat pump service call in Los Angeles typically runs $175-$765 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a capacitor, reversing valve, defrost control board, or compressor contactor. We keep the most common Trane-specific parts on our trucks, so about 70% of heat pump repairs we see in LA are done in a single visit, usually the same day you call. Most owners discover the problem the same way: the system runs but won’t cool, runs but won’t heat, or short-cycles and trips the breaker when the reversing valve sticks. Victor Mancini has seen enough of these to tell you this plainly: a Trane heat pump rarely fails all at once. It gives you a week or two of strange noises and uneven temperatures first.
Which Trane Models This Applies To
We service the full residential Trane heat pump lineup, from the current XV series (XV18, XV19, XV20i) and XR series (XR14, XR15, XR16, XR17) down to older XL series units (XL14i, XL15i, XL16i) that are still running in neighborhoods across Los Angeles, especially in older homes in the Valley and West LA. The compatibility gotcha with Trane heat pumps is the defrost control board: Trane changed board part numbers at least four times since the early 2000s, and a board from an XR14 will not always talk to an XV18 even if the connectors look similar. We check the model and serial number on the unit’s data plate before ordering anything, and we match boards by the full part number, not just the series. For OEM versus aftermarket, Trane’s OEM parts are made by the same factories that build the unit, and on compressor or reversing valve work we won’t install aftermarket. For contactors, capacitors, and defrost sensors, a quality aftermarket part from a manufacturer like Packard or Mars is often within 5% of the OEM spec and can save you $40-$90. We’ll tell you which is which and let you choose.
Signs Your Trane Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Unit blows room-temperature air in cooling mode. The compressor runs but the reversing valve is stuck in heating position, so the system is sending heat the wrong direction. This is a classic Trane XV and XL issue after 8-10 years of Los Angeles heat.
- Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin. Usually a failed dual-run capacitor, a $35 part that takes 20 minutes to swap. If you wait, the compressor overheats and you’re looking at a much bigger bill.
- System short-cycles on and off every few minutes. A failing defrost sensor or low refrigerant tripping the low-pressure switch. Short-cycling is the fastest way to kill a Trane compressor, which is a $2,800-$4,500 mistake you don’t want to make.
- Frost builds up on the outdoor coil in mild weather. The defrost board has stopped initiating defrost cycles. It’s a $180-$340 fix if caught early; left alone, the ice crushes the coil fins and you’re replacing the coil.
- Heat pump trips the breaker repeatedly. A worn compressor contactor arcing, or a compressor drawing locked-rotor amps. Don’t reset the breaker more than once. Call us instead.

DIY or Call Us?
The safe things to check yourself: confirm your thermostat is set correctly, check that the breakers are on, and clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit. If the outdoor fan runs but the air isn’t conditioned, or if you see frost on the coil, or the breaker trips twice, stop and call (817) 402-2972. Heat pump work involves 240-volt electrical and pressurized refrigerant lines. A capacitor holds enough charge to stop your heart even with the unit unplugged, and the refrigerant side runs at pressures that can cause serious injury if opened by someone without the right recovery equipment. One honest warning from someone who does this daily: the $20 savings on a DIY capacitor swap disappears real fast when you wire it backward and blow the $500 control board.
FAQs
With our coastal climate and moderate heating loads, a Trane heat pump in Los Angeles typically lasts 14-18 years before the compressor or reversing valve gives out, but the smaller electrical components (capacitors, contactors, sensors) start failing around year 8-10. That’s normal wear, not a lemon. Call (817) 402-2972 if you’re hitting that age and seeing intermittent symptoms – catching a $200 contactor before it takes out a compressor saves thousands.
No. A stuck reversing valve is a mechanical failure inside a sealed component, and no amount of tapping or adjusting will fix it. Replacement is a 3-5 hour job involving refrigerant recovery, brazing, pressure testing, and recharge, which is why it’s at the top of our price range.
Most capacitor, contactor, and sensor replacements take 45-90 minutes on site. A defrost control board swap is usually under two hours. Reversing valve work takes most of a day. We’ll give you a firm arrival window when you book and a written price before we start.
Yes. We carry Trane OEM and quality aftermarket capacitors, contactors, defrost sensors, and the most common XR and XL defrost boards on our trucks across our Los Angeles service area. We also stock common parts for Carrier and Lennox heat pumps for homes with mixed-brand systems. Call (817) 402-2972 and tell us your model number – we can usually tell you over the phone whether the part is on the truck.
Tell us what it’s doing, and we’ll tell you what it needs – no guessing, no padding the ticket. Coldharbour Heating & Air is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Trane.
