Uneven Heating and Cooling
What’s Happening
Uneven heating and cooling almost always means your system is either not moving conditioned air where it needs to go, or it’s producing it inconsistently in the first place. The most common culprits are a clogged air filter, a failing blower motor, blocked or leaking ductwork, or a refrigerant issue affecting how well your AC unit conditions the air. In most homes, a technician can pinpoint the root cause in a single visit.
What you’re living with right now – one room that feels like a sauna while another is comfortable, or a second floor that never quite cools down in summer – isn’t just annoying. It’s your system telling you something specific. The good news is that symptom points in a fairly short list of directions, and most of them are repairable without replacing the whole system. The job is to figure out which one you’re dealing with before it turns into a bigger problem.
Why It Happens
Clogged or Dirty Air Filter
A clogged filter is the single most common reason airflow drops off unevenly across a home. When the filter is packed with dust and debris, the blower has to work harder to pull air through it – and the rooms farthest from the air handler are the ones that suffer most. Pull your filter out and hold it up to a light source. If you can’t see light through it, that’s your first answer.
Blocked, Leaking, or Undersized Ductwork
Ducts are the delivery system, and they fail in quiet ways. A duct that has separated at a joint is dumping conditioned air into your attic or crawl space instead of your bedroom. A duct that was never sized correctly for the room it serves will starve that room every time the system runs. If one particular room is always the problem – doesn’t matter how long the system runs – that’s a strong sign the issue is in the branch duct feeding that space, not in the equipment itself.
Failing Blower Motor or Capacitor
The blower motor is what pushes air through your whole house. When it starts to wear out, or when the capacitor that helps it start begins to fail, the motor runs at reduced speed without announcing itself loudly. You might notice the airflow feels weak at every register, not just one. A failing capacitor sometimes produces a low hum or a brief hesitation when the system kicks on. Do not attempt to access capacitors yourself – they hold an electrical charge that can be dangerous even when the system is powered off. This is a job for a trained technician.
Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak
If your AC is running constantly but certain areas never reach the set temperature, and you notice ice forming on the copper lines near your outdoor unit or the air handler, a refrigerant leak is a serious possibility. Low refrigerant means the system can’t transfer heat efficiently, so output drops – unevenly, because the rooms with longer duct runs or more heat gain feel it first. Refrigerant work requires certified handling and proper equipment; this is not a DIY repair.
What to Do Right Now
- Check your air filter first. Find the filter slot on your air handler or return-air grille and pull the filter out. If it’s grey and dense with dust, swap it for a fresh one of the same size and run the system for an hour to see if airflow improves. This costs a few dollars and takes five minutes.
- Walk every room and feel the supply registers. Hold your hand over each register while the system is running. Note which rooms have strong airflow and which feel weak or dead. Take a photo or write it down – this information is genuinely useful to the technician and can cut diagnostic time.
- Check any visible duct connections you can safely reach. In a basement or utility room, look where large duct sections connect. If a joint has pulled apart, you’ll often see it – and sometimes feel warm or cool air escaping where it shouldn’t be. Don’t climb into an attic or crawl space; leave those areas to the tech.
- Look at the outdoor unit and the line set. If you see ice forming on the copper refrigerant lines or on the outdoor coil, turn the system to fan-only mode and call immediately. Running an AC with a refrigerant problem can damage the compressor, which is the most expensive component in the system.
- Don’t close off vents in unused rooms thinking it helps. It’s a reasonable instinct, but closing more than two or three vents raises static pressure in the duct system and can make uneven airflow worse. Leave them open while you wait for the technician.
How We Fix It
When your local Coldharbour Heating & Air technician arrives, the first thing they do is a full system check – airflow at registers, filter condition, blower operation, refrigerant pressures, and a visual inspection of the ductwork sections they can access. That diagnostic picture tells them where the breakdown is happening.
From there, the repair path depends on what the system shows. A blower motor or capacitor replacement is typically completed the same visit. A duct repair – sealing a separated joint or replacing a damaged section – is also handled on site in most cases. A refrigerant leak requires locating the leak point, repairing it, and recharging the system; your technician will walk you through exactly what that involves on your specific equipment, whether it’s a Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, or any of the other nine major brands we’re trained on.
Before any of that work starts, you get a written price. That number doesn’t change at the door – that’s not a policy we apply selectively, it’s one of the four planks of The Kingswell Way. And every repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a full year, we come back and correct it at no charge. The guarantee is in writing before the technician leaves. This is an AC repair or furnace repair situation depending on the season and the system – and both services are handled the same way.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on what’s causing it. A clogged filter or a minor duct issue is an inconvenience, not an emergency – though letting it run that way will strain your equipment over time. But if you’re seeing ice on the refrigerant lines, or if your furnace is heating some rooms while others are getting no heat at all in cold weather, that warrants a call today. A system working that hard to compensate can fail completely, and in extreme temperatures that becomes a genuine health concern. Call (817) 402-2972 and describe what you’re seeing – a live person answers around the clock.
Our phones are answered by a live person 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including weekends and holidays – no voicemail tree, no waiting until Monday morning. Call (817) 402-2972 and your local Coldharbour Heating & Air team will tell you exactly when a technician can be there.
For most uneven heating and cooling complaints, the fix is a repair – not a replacement. A failing motor, a duct issue, or a refrigerant leak are all component-level problems, and replacing a component is almost always the right call when the rest of the system is in reasonable shape. Your technician will give you an honest read on the condition of your equipment during the diagnostic visit and put the repair price in writing before anything starts.
Every repair we complete is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the issue comes back within a full year of the repair, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s not a verbal assurance – it’s written down before the technician walks out your door. That’s the promise; that’s how we stand behind the work.
